The history and growth of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the town of Ashland are deeply intertwined. At a time when the town was trying to re-establish itself as the jewel of southern Oregon, a young teacher was given the chance to make a vision come to life. That vision, which started as a three day, three play festival in 1935, was a huge success and has grown to be a cornerstone presence for the area, drawing thousands of visitors to the region each year.
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival provides an opportunity to encounter multiple plays during a season and a chance for theatre goers to engage with the plays in unique ways. Keep reading to learn more about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and what makes it such a memorable experience.
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival Season
One of the great things about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is the length of time it runs. What began as a three-day event performing The Twelfth Night and Merchants of Venice now runs from March through October with 11 different plays performed continuously during these months. Shakespeare continues to be the inspiration behind the festival, but today guests can also enjoy new, one-of-a-kind productions performed alongside beloved Shakespeare plays.
However, with the continuing impact of COVID-19 on the world, the 2021 season looks a little different than years past. For the first time ever, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s season will be both a digital and physical event. The season officially opened on March 1, 2021 through their digital platform, which allows people to enjoy scheduled plays from the comfort and safety of their homes. If all goes according to plan, starting in the fall theatre goers will be able to enjoy an extended season with on-stage performances as well.
