Nestled in the Southern Cascade Range, Crater Lake is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Southern Oregon. What’s that? You’ve never been?!? It’s just a scenic two-hour drive from Ashland! Crater Lake National Park offers an unforgettable day trip filled with natural beauty, rich history, and lots of activities. The pristine blue waters and dramatic cliffs of Crater Lake, formed by a collapsed volcano, provide a unique and awe-inspiring experience for all who visit.
Crater Lake's history dates back over 7,700 years when a massive volcanic eruption caused Mount Mazama to collapse, creating the caldera that now holds the lake. This natural marvel is the deepest lake in the United States, with a depth of 1,943 feet. The Klamath tribes, native to the region, have long revered the lake for its spiritual significance and stunning beauty. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt established Crater Lake National Park, ensuring the preservation of this natural wonder for future generations.

Once you arrive at Crater Lake, there are numerous activities to fill your day. Start with a visit to the Rim Village Visitor Center to learn more about the park's geology, history, and wildlife. For a breathtaking view, take a scenic drive along Rim Drive, a 33-mile loop that offers numerous lookout points where you can stop and soak in the views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Hiking enthusiasts can choose from a variety of trails, ranging from easy walks like the Sun Notch Trail to more challenging hikes such as the Garfield Peak Trail, which rewards hikers with panoramic vistas.

In addition to sightseeing and hiking, Crater Lake offers other exciting activities. During the summer months, boat tours are available on the lake, providing a unique perspective from the water and an opportunity to visit Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone rising from the lake's surface. Also in the summer, Crater Lake Trolley offers daily trolley tours along the 33-mile Rim Drive. The tours normally start in July and run through mid-September.

Winter transforms the park into a snowy wonderland, perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along designated trails. Nearby, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest offers additional recreational opportunities, including fishing, bird watching, and picnicking. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquility, Crater Lake and its surroundings offer a perfect day trip from Country Willows Inn, promising a memorable and enriching experience.
