If you've spent any time wandering through Ashland's beautiful Lithia Park, there's a good chance you've heard the soulful sounds of a cello floating through the air. And if you've followed that music, you've likely discovered Daniel Sperry, a beloved local musician whose performances have become as much a part of the park's charm as its winding paths, gardens, and towering trees.
For years, Daniel has shared his music with locals and visitors, creating the kind of unexpected moments that make a visit to Ashland so memorable. We're certain many Country Willows Inn guests have enjoyed his performances, whether they've stopped to listen for a while or simply heard his music drifting through the park during an afternoon stroll.
A Musical Tradition Born by Chance
Daniel's journey to becoming one of Ashland's most familiar musical personalities began with an extraordinary act of kindness. In 2008, a friend who was deeply moved by his music purchased a beautiful cello for him. Daniel named the instrument Flare, inspired by a poem by Mary Oliver. Not long afterward, Daniel took his young son, Gabe, to Lithia Park. When Gabe asked his dad to play the new cello, Daniel settled onto a stone wall and began making music.
What happened next was completely unexpected.
As Daniel played, passersby began leaving money in his open cello case. What started as a simple moment between father and son would eventually grow into a remarkable musical tradition.
More than 15 seasons later, Daniel has become a familiar and much-loved presence in Lithia Park, performing regularly and sharing his music with people from all walks of life.
More Than Just Music in the Park
Part of what makes Daniel's performances so special is the connection he creates with his listeners.
Over the years, his music has provided the soundtrack for countless personal moments. Families have stopped to listen together, couples have shared romantic afternoons, and visitors have found a peaceful place to relax and reflect.
For some, his performances have become treasured memories associated with Ashland itself.
That's one of the things we love most about our little town. Beyond the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, wonderful restaurants, galleries, and shops, Ashland is filled with people who contribute to its character in their own special ways.
Daniel is certainly one of them.
When Ashland Came Together
In September, Daniel experienced a heartbreaking setback when he was involved in a bicycle accident while transporting his beloved cello to a wedding performance.
Fortunately, Daniel escaped without serious injury, but Flare, the instrument that had accompanied him for nearly two decades, was badly damaged.
For someone whose life revolves around music, the loss was understandably devastating.
But Ashland did what close-knit communities do best.
Friends, neighbors, fellow musicians, and admirers rallied around Daniel. A fundraising effort was organized, and the generosity that followed was remarkable.
The fundraising goal was reached, and we're delighted to share that Daniel now has a new cello.

There's something especially heartwarming about this story. Nearly two decades ago, one person's generosity helped launch a new chapter in Daniel's musical life. Now, the kindness of an entire community has helped ensure that his music continues.
Another Reason to Love Lithia Park
At Country Willows Inn, we often encourage our guests to spend time exploring Lithia Park. With its peaceful walking paths, beautiful landscaping, Ashland Creek, and inviting places to simply sit and enjoy the surroundings, it's one of our favorite Ashland destinations.
But a visit to the park offers something you won't necessarily find on a map or in a travel guide.
You might hear a beautiful cello melody carried on the breeze.
And if you do, we encourage you to follow the sound, find a comfortable spot, and enjoy a little of the magic that Daniel Sperry has brought to Ashland for so many years.
We're thrilled that his music will continue to be part of our community.
After all, it's the people, the unexpected experiences, and the little moments of beauty that make Ashland such a special place to visit.
And Daniel Sperry is a wonderful example of all three.
